Computer will not detect blank cd

Q: Hey guys, My friend laptop has decided it does not want any hardware, except for the CD drive to recognize, and Im really curious about the cause. The Device Manager will display nothing , and devices such as the Ethernet port will not ... Many computer and software knowledge ....
